THURBER, Ian Douglas Ronald
July 6, 1959 - March 31, 2014

Cherished husband, devoted and adored father, beloved son and brother, loyal and generous friend, neighbor and colleague; Ian's sudden absence has stilled our world.

The love of Ian's life was Pamela Shultz, and together they created their family of three amazing sons: Maxwell, Harrison and Michael, who were the pride of his life, and were accompanied by a steady stream of assorted pets throughout the years. His family was the centre of his being. His idea of complete happiness was being with Pam and "the brothers". His delights in life were the simplest ones with his family; soccer games, walks along the river, building projects with his sons. Ian's acute observations of the absurdities of life became anecdotes delivered in an inimitable style to the delight of all who loved him. Underneath it all, like a deep clear stream, was his profound sense of right and wrong.

His sisters Kathleen (Felix), Patricia (Scot), Mary-Ann; brother Bruce; nieces Jessica, Jessica, Nicole and Isabelle; nephews Benjamin, Daniel, Joel, Finn and many cousins, will keep him in their hearts and minds forever. Ian was predeceased by his mother Winifred and father Willard (Bill) Thurber.

Ian was born in Brantford, Ontario and lived in many parts of Canada while growing up. In the early 1980's he moved from Edmonton to Vancouver to pursue a career in policing. A family tradition started with his great-grandfather Samuel Thurber, a member of the Northwest Mounted Police, and continued with his father Bill and sister Pat, who both served in the RCMP.

Ian served with the Vancouver City Police from 1986 until the time of his death. His deep sense of justice, and his humour, generosity and ease with all he worked with, garnered him fiercely loyal friends and the admiration and respect of all those who serve to protect.

“He will order His angels
To guard you wherever you go
They will carry you in their hands
Lest you hurt your foot on a stone.”
Psalm 91:11-12

A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, April 7, 2014 at 1:00 pm at South Delta Baptist Church, 1988 56th Street, Tsawwassen, BC, with a Reception to follow in the church gymnasium.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Ian's memory can be made to Critter Care at www.crittercarewildlife.org , O.W.L. at www.owlcanada.org , or World Vision Canada www.worldvision.ca .
